Caribbean Storm Early on Saturday, Ophelia pounded the mid-Atlantic coast with gale-force gusts, a hazardous storm surge, and the first of what could be seven inches of rain before the weekend is out

The Ophelia center made landfall at about 6:15 a.m. near Emerald Isle with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph (110 kph), according to radar, hurricane hunter aircraft, and observers on the ground, the hurricane center reported in an update. According to the center, that is about 25 miles (40 km) northwest of Cape Lookout.

The National Hurricane Center's Philippe Papin, a hurricane expert, stated that the main risk posed by the storm system over the next few days will be the potential for flooding caused by the rain.

The storm is expected to exit off the coast of New Jersey and return to the Atlantic Ocean by Monday morning, AccuWeather reported.
