By Shaista Kaunain

Enhance your coding experience in Google Colab by learning how to display line numbers and adjust font sizes in your notebooks. In this tutorial, we delve into simple yet effective ways to customize your Colab environment for better readability and code management.

Why Customize Your Google Colab Interface?

Google Colab is a powerful tool that combines code execution with rich text elements, making it ideal for machine learning, data analysis, and education. Customizing your workspace can significantly improve your productivity by:

Improving Readability: Larger fonts reduce eye strain during long coding sessions.
Easier Debugging: Line numbers help you pinpoint errors quickly.
Personalized Experience: Tailoring the interface to your preferences makes coding more enjoyable.

How to Show Line Numbers in Google Colab

Line numbers are essential for tracking code, especially when debugging or collaborating with others. Here’s how to enable them:

1. Open Your Notebook: Launch Google Colab and open your desired notebook.
2. Access Code Cell Options: Click on the three vertical dots (⋮) in the top-right corner of any code cell.
3. Enable Line Numbers: From the dropdown menu, select “Show line numbers”.
– Line numbers will now appear alongside your code.

Tip: To enable line numbers for all code cells by default, go to “Tools” > “Preferences” > “Editor” and check the “Show line numbers” option.

How to Change Font Size in Google Colab

Adjusting the font size can make your code easier to read. Follow these steps to change it:

1. Navigate to Preferences: Click on “Tools” in the top menu bar.
– Select “Preferences” from the dropdown.
2. Adjust Font Size:
– In the “Editor” tab, locate the “Font size” slider.
– Slide it left or right to decrease or increase the font size, respectively.
3. Apply Changes:
– Click “Save” to apply the new font size to your code cells.

Note: The font size adjustment will affect all code cells in your notebook.

Additional Customization Tips

Toggle Word Wrap:  In the “Editor” preferences, you can enable “Word wrap” to prevent horizontal scrolling.
Change Theme: Choose between “Light” and “Dark” themes for a comfortable visual experience.
Keyboard Shortcuts: Familiarize yourself with Colab’s keyboard shortcuts by selecting “Tools” > “Keyboard Shortcuts”.

Benefits of These Customizations

Enhanced Productivity: Quickly navigate through your code with visible line numbers.
Reduced Errors: Identify and fix bugs more efficiently.
Comfortable Coding Environment: Adjust settings to suit your visual preferences, reducing fatigue.
